For Stop Food Waste Day, we wanted to help you understand how the food in your kitchen can go further and last longer. So we worked with Chef Nureen Glaves to produce the ‘Create & Make Food Waste Hacks’ mini-guide! It’s full of tips and advice on how to help repurpose food and combat food waste.

Our guide also contains recipes that go hand in hand with the ingredients in our Create & Make boxes: meal kits for families providing a selection of store cupboard staples along with a lucky dip of fresh produce and instructional materials to help families turn ‘wonky’ fruit and vegetables into delicious meals.

Speaking about the collaboration with Chef Nureen Glaves and our work on food waste the Mayor’s Fund for London’s Food Project Lead Adam Comber said:

“We’re thrilled to have worked with Feed Me Good on our “Create & Make Food Waste Hacks” mini guide. Anyone who’s heard of Chef Nureen Glaves will know about her expertise in preparing delicious meals to suit any palate, diet or budget! Everything she’s done from grocery budget guides to recipes for gluten-free Pandan Cake are a smash hit – so we couldn’t think of a more perfect partner to come up with some suggested recipes and cooking tips for our Create & Make project.”

“Create & Make kits are specifically designed to utilise surplus food, providing young people with a mystery selection of fresh and ambient ingredients that they can turn into delicious healthy meals. We hope that Chef Nureen’s guide will inspire young people to use their ingredients in even more creative ways, while expanding their awareness surrounding food lifespans and nutrition.”

“This collaboration with Feed Me Good is part of the Mayor’s Fund for London’s work to develop food equity in our capital. Our Take & Make recipe kits have provided over 200,000 meals to families over the past year and our food projects reach over 500 community organisations across all of the London boroughs. By improving Young Londoners’ understanding of surplus food and healthy eating habits, Create & Make kits build food citizenship while tackling London’s enormous food waste footprint. To date, our Create & Make kits have helped to prevent approximately 290,000kg of food from being wasted – saving 30,800kg of food in the two weeks of Easter just gone.”

Nureen is the founder and CEO of Feed Me Good; a health and wellbeing Community Interest Company operating for over eight years and with a strong track record, working with the housing, education and charity sector. Speaking about food waste awareness:

“When we think of wasted ingredients, it’s often scraps of leftover food being thrown away or ingredients that haven’t been used before they expire. But you can actually make some delicious dishes at home.”

At the Mayor’s Fund for London, we are the largest provider of holiday food and activities in the capital, working with community partners in every borough, in every school holiday, to ensure children facing the biggest barriers not only survive but thrive. With 13 weeks away from school each year, we’re the bridge between term times that keeps young Londoners growing.
