London and New York youth connect in exciting virtual event
A commitment to supporting the ideas and creativity of young people is the driving force behind My City and Me – a project that gives young people a creative platform to share their experiences of the pandemic.
On Wednesday, the project concluded with an exciting virtual event for our young people and like-minded young New Yorkers. For the first time, both groups of young people came together to connect virtually, create together and find out what life is like on both sides of the Atlantic.
The webinar began with our young co-hosts, Sarah from London and Shania from New York, welcoming everyone to the session and introducing the showcase part of the event. We had Sylvi and Shania from New York showing what they created for DocumentarNYC, and Steph and Amanda from London showing what they created for My City and Me.
This led us on to the main event: the breakout sessions, where youth from both groups came together to create a new piece of art responding to the prompt, “What does connection mean to you in 2020?”.
It was incredible to see what they produced in such a short period of time, and our special guests from Pinterest, Derris, Facebook and Instagram were very impressed too!
Our CEO, Kirsty McHugh, said: “I am delighted to see the work so far. I’ve been absolutely blown away by the quality, innovation and energy of what you’ve created. Congratulations!”
Anusha Venkataraman, Chief Service Officer at the New York Mayor’s Office, added: “We are so proud to give a voice to New York city youth and those from around the globe. We have seen the power of youth through these projects.”
