Top tips for success with Access Aspiration

8th June 2021

As part of our commitment to shining a light on the issues that matter most to young people, we reached out to our Student Ambassadors to talk about their thoughts, feelings and concerns for the future. Here, Student Ambassador Basma talks about how to make the most of the programme as a student.

“The Access Aspiration programme has aided me in unimaginable ways, especially within my desired sector: law. The programme has offered me the opportunity to attend multiple events and experiences with prominent law firms, such as Peters & Peters LLP. I have been privileged to attend numerous sessions to help me with my CV, cover letters, career options and much more, all of which have helped me delve further into my desired sector!

To help other students to make the most out of the opportunities available, I’ve put together my top tips for success below.

  • Always have a notebook and pen

Make sure to jot down any important information or advice that the people you have heard from are providing that might be useful for the future.

  • Try to remember all of the names of people that you will be working with

This includes recruiters, managers and any other employees that you meet! You can write them down in a notebook or even in the notes app on your phone. In the future, this will be very helpful; you may be able to connect with future employers on LinkedIn or reach out to them for further advice or help.

  • Get involved and ask questions

You won’t learn anything if you are passively listening. Make sure to get involved with all of the tasks set and do the work to the best of your ability. Many employers will remember you for the effort you put in! Also, ask questions, don’t be afraid and ask anything you want. No question is a stupid question and you’ll be able to learn from the answers provided. In addition, employers will be able to see that you are pro-actively learning and getting stuck in, as well as utilising the work experience to the best of your ability.

I hope these tips will help you to prepare for your work experience placement, and all the wonderful opportunities that come with it!”
