Searching the Sky

8th March 2017

This week the students at Lister Community School were learning the skills to discover variable stars. Our enthusiastic bunch were using the training images to run through the process on Muniwin to see identify possible variables. They then searched the variable star index to find out whether the star has already been discovered. As these are training images, they had already been found by the Russian students. The students then searched for more data on the Catalina Sky Survey and downloaded this information to run through WinEffect. Using this software the students were able to determine the period and magnitude variance of the star. They are looking forward to using the new images in the coming week to make some of their own discoveries.
