Lloyd’s Charities Trust makes grants to a wide range of charities and causes on behalf of the Lloyd’s insurance market.
We funded Mayor’s Fund for London to develop and set up Count on Us Maths Clubs, providing maths support to 1,871 children across 26 primary schools in some of London’s most disadvantaged areas.
Poor numeracy is linked to a range of negative outcomes, such as unemployment. We wanted to help engage children early in maths, make the subject more fun, boost confidence and raise academic attainment, ultimately improving life chances and helping young people to make a positive contribution to society.
Children who attended the maths clubs outperformed their peers in maths attainment by 67% the term after they attended. Children were also more confident in maths, with nearly 80% of students agreeing that it helped them with their school work.
All of the lessons learned and good practices have been pulled together in this dedicated Count on Us Maths Club website which includes a getting started guide, case studies and new accredited resources, so that any school, anywhere, can set up and run their own maths club.
