Kitchen Social – Take & Make boxes
As London’s largest holiday provision provider, we know that food insecurity affects young people in complex and detrimental ways.
We also know that young people are not always able to take advantage of holiday provision.
In response to the unique demands of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kitchen Social evolved the ‘Take & Make box’, an innovative way to get young people cooking at home. Take & Make boxes can be funded by organisations that want to partner with us and are available to order by local authorities.
KITCHEN SOCIAL’S RESPONSE IS THE ‘TAKE & MAKE’ INITIATIVE
Taking inspiration from the recipe kit box phenomenon – Hello Fresh and Mindful Chef – Take & Make aims to get children learning to cook in their homes and spending time with siblings and parents. We designed this initiative in direct response to the Covid-19 crisis allowing us to get healthy food into homes regardless of the lockdown status.
A FAMILY MEAL
Each recipe-kit box contains a delicious, nutritious meal kit with everything needed to cook a healthy meal from scratch. Families receive a branded box packed full of quality ingredients and created with 5day+ shelf life meaning the box can be flexibly worked into any meal plan schedule. Take & Make recipe-kit boxes are also perfect for the time poor household where the need for a speedy meal solution can often lead to less healthy choices. 97% of the families surveyed during our Covid-19 response told us that they had kitchen equipment to cook at home.
LEARNING LIFE SKILLS & BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Take & Make boxes are designed to get children learning to cook in their homes, spending time with their siblings and carers. Learning to cook is the gateway to eating well and enjoying good food as well as a host of equally important benefits – physically and mentally.
Working with the chefs and nutritionists at The Let’s Cook Project, every box contains step by step instructions and important skill training cards plus online video tutorials to build confidence in cooks of all ages. The videos feature two young people from London. The experience of cooking meals not only builds self-confidence and lays the foundation for healthy eating habits, but can also help young kids learn basic maths concepts.

VALUE FOR MONEY AND SUSTAINABLE
There are diverse vegetarian recipe boxes to choose from – all designed to create a meal for 4 with consideration of many known allergens and religious preferences. Example recipes include: Chilli Non Carne, Chickpea and Sweet Potato Curry and Spicy Bean Burgers.
Our fulfilment partner has been able to exclusively offer Kitchen Social a discount on wholesale rates which means that the cost of a box starts at £6.84. Take & Make boxes not only promote healthy eating but also represent a planet positive, sustainable solution.
By providing the precise amounts of ingredients for each recipe, our Take & Make boxes reduce food waste by minimising leftovers and the use of largely ambient ingredients in each box creates a long shelf life solution (5day+) further reducing the risk of food wastage.
Take & Make Boxes are a high quality, healthy and educational solution to holiday provision. They promote a positive relationship with food that promotes health, wellbeing and enjoyment of cooking. An ‘off the shelf’ solution, they are ready to order and easily delivered.
A LONDON-WIDE SERVICE
During our summer holiday food and activity programme with the Department for Education, (2020), Kitchen Social was able to distribute 15,989 Take & Make boxes across Lambeth and Southwark. This translates to 63,956 meals and we received incredibly positive feedback from your children and families about the scheme.
“I am amazed at the food boxes that come with hygiene instructions and how to prepare food. They are really very helpful for me, since I am currently not working and live alone with my 7 year old son, so financially it is very helpful. The daily lunch for my son saves me money and time to enjoy more as a family…and my son has a healthy lunch every day.”
“The ‘Take and Make Box’ activity pack has revealed hidden talents! Parents are so proud of their children.”
Take & Make will continue over the Christmas period, when we are aware that hubs struggle to offer onsite provision. The programme will deliver over 20,000 meals in December across the capital.
