Internships

The aim is to develop core skills essential for the workplace, including time management, communication, confidence, and public speaking. Student play a key role in supporting the Mayor’s Entrepreneur team with competition promotion and will also have the opportunity to conduct research, build a social media strategy, and develop case studies.

Isobel

Having been an intern for the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Programme a couple of years ago, I was excited about the prospect of returning this time as a Senior Intern. Being given a high level of responsibility and oversight for two groups of interns felt daunting at first, but with the support and guidance of the delivery team I developed leadership skills and the necessary confidence to manage a team. I particularly enjoyed the work that I was responsible for within the research working group as it gave me the chance to not only conduct short pieces of research and analyse the findings in a non-academic context, but also support others who may not be as familiar or experienced with such research. The opportunity to complete working group tasks throughout the internship around other promotion-based tasks was a good way to break up the work and introduce more variation.

Being an intern for the Mayor’s Entrepreneur is as exciting as it is diverse, including opportunities to engage with potential participants, attend entrepreneurship events, and participate in training workshops. I think attending the workshops is one of the most valuable and underrated aspects of the internship as I found that they have provided me with important skills that will be useful beyond just their application to entrepreneurship.

My 6-month internship at the Mayor’s Entrepreneur was an amazing experience, teaching me various skills.

My main role was to promote the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Programme to students at the University of Greenwich, which I did through lecture shout outs and attending entrepreneurial events at the Generator. Additionally, I was part of both the case studies and social media working groups, where I created content, designed graphics about previous winners and finalists, and implemented improvements to the Instagram account.

One of my biggest achievements during the internship was speaking at a student entrepreneur panel at my university about the programme and my experiences as a student entrepreneur and intern, which also helped generate interest in the competition. Lastly, my contributions to the social media working group have resulted in an overall ~60% increase in engagement, enhancing the Instagram account to better reflect the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Programme’s brand.

During my time as an intern, I learned valuable skills in communication, time management, and public speaking. I also gained a deeper understanding of working for a charity and working in a team, specifically in two at the same time. This improved my skills in terms of managing multiple projects and teams, especially since I had been a part of societies, clubs, and had another job all at the same time.

Last year, I was going through Instagram and saw a post from my university’s employability centre, which was about an internship opportunity at the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Competition. As I was studying International Relations, I initially thought it was pointless to apply, as I thought it was more suited to business degree students. Now having completed the internship, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Working as an intern has been a very enriching experience and I have learnt so many tangible skills that will benefit me in the future. I would strongly encourage all students to apply for the internship, as the experience and skills that you will learn through it are unimaginable!

My experience as a Mayor’s Entrepreneur intern was incredibly rewarding and provided me with valuable insights into the world of event planning and promotion. I also learned the importance of consistency when doing social media promotion. By regularly posting updates, news, and information about the competition across various social media platforms we were able to expand the impact and gain a more wide ra audience.

One of the biggest takeaways from this experience was the importance of effective communication. Through my interactions with different groups and individuals, I learned how to tailor my messaging to different audiences, and how to effectively convey the benefits of the competition in a way that resonated with them. I also honed my public speaking skills by giving shout-out lectures, which helped me to become more confident and comfortable speaking in front of a large audience.
